This is my Son, my Chosen; Listen to Him

This meditation is based on a passage for October 15, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Luke 9:28-36

Reflection and Question: This story is known in Christian tradition as “The Transfiguration” marking the change that comes over Jesus as He prays. When Peter sputters something about marking the spot, a cloud comes and a voice commands the disciples to listen to Jesus. And then it’s all over. What is striking is the response of the disciples. I am certain I would act exactly the same way: wooziness like sleep, nonsense to try to say something, then terror and silence. What a relief that all of these reactions are okay as long as we listen to Jesus! What would you have done in this moment?

Prayer: Holy Jesus, we settle for knowing you as our Brother and Teacher. So we are as startled as Peter, John and James at this dazzling white change and this talking with Moses and Elijah and this word from heaven. Bottom line — we’re listening. Amen.
